Former Boston City Council President and candidate for Attorney General Andrea Campbell has secured yet another key endorsement in the Democratic primary to succeed Maura Healey as the Commonwealth's top lawyer.

Former Rep. Joe Kennedy III appeared with Campbell at Portugalia Market in Fall River today. Fall River is the largest city in the Fourth Congressional District, which Kennedy represented in Congress from 2013-2021.

"I'm thrilled to be here to support the councilor and her run for Attorney General," Kennedy told WBSM. "I've had deep respect and admiration for her and career in public service. She has consistently sought to try to make sure that the structures of our government adequately and fairly representing every single person, regardless of size or stature. Her own personal story is extraordinary and inspiring and I think is a real testament to the type of leader she is and type of leader she will be in the Attorney General's office."

Kennedy added that during his time in office representing the SouthCoast in Congress, he knew how often the needs of gateway communities are de-prioritized over the needs of major metropolitan areas, and that he thinks Campbell will make the needs of these communities a central focus of her campaign.

Campbell's stop in Fall River today is part of her campaign's “Listening to Our Gateway Cities” tour, which is an initiative to visit all 26 gateway cities in the Commonwealth to meet the residents, and find out how best to respond to each community's needs. Also in attendance were former Fall River Mayor Ed Lambert; Bob Sherman, who served as Ambassador to Portugal during the Obama Administration; and Michael and Fernando Benevides, owners of the Portugalia Market, who gave Campbell a tour of the marketplace.

"Well I would say that gateway cities are the anchor of the whole state," Campbell told WBSM. "And we recognize that early on we launched this gateway cities tour to not just say we wanted to go out to communities that feel left out and left behind, but to demonstrate that in action. So I'm really honored to be here in Fall River with the former Congressman who used to represent this area. He is well-regarded still here. We're very excited, of course, to see this endorsement, but also it speaks to his leadership always focusing those communities who feel left out and left behind and really vulnerable populations – and we're stressing that in this race."

"The AG's is going to have to support families in a very incredible way coming out of COVID, particularly on the economic side," Campbell added. "And the best way to do that is to actually get out here...and I will be back of course. This is just the beginning. I'm honored to have the support of all these folks who are doing remarkable work have over the years in Fall River and other gateway communities."

Campbell is also scheduled to attend New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell's State of the City address on Wednesday.
